Arlo in Beech with Shou Sugi Ban

Arlo Platter in Beech with Shou Sugi Ban Finish

This platter is hand turned from English Beech Wood that came to us from East Sussex. The side and rim have undergone the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban being scorched with a 2000 degree flame to cause instant charring. An abrasive is then used to remove the thin layer of loose charcoal and the process started again. After the second charring the whole platter is treated with a food safe organic oil and left for many weeks to cure.

The rich colour of the interior is perfectly framed by the contrasting blackened rim creating a beautiful piece of handmade contemporary design which will be equally at home as a decorative object, or on the table, where it could be used to display fruit or other foods.

Some fine cracks and splits are evidence of the rapid moisture loss that takes place during the making of a Shou Sugi Ban piece. However, these are now stable and won’t get any larger.

Measures 30cm wide, 5cm tall and 2.5cm deep.

Finished with Organic Hemp Seed Oil
