Scorched Ash Board

Scorched Ash Board

This silky smooth piece was featured in the April 19 issue of Elle Decoration UK.

Shou Sugi Ban is the ancient Japanese art of charring wood. This board has been scorched with a 2000 degree flame and an abrasive used to remove the thin layer of loose charcoal. The process is then started again and after the second charring, the surface is treated with a food safe organic oil and left for many weeks to cure.

Some fine splits along the side of the board are evidence of the rapid moisture loss that takes place during the making of a Shou Sugi Ban piece, however these are now stable.

Finished with natural hemp seed oil, this board is perfect for bread, cheese, presenting charcuterie or simply as a display piece.
