Bottle Vases in Patterned Beech
Bottle Vases in Patterned Beech
Our classic Bottle vase shapes in a turned in our unique way from some truly stunning material. Designed and made to be beautiful objects in their own right, they can also enhance and be enhanced by some dried flowers or an artistically selected twig or two.
To produce this unique material fallen Beech trees are left on their sides for between 3-5 years and during this time the patterns are formed by fungi as they break the log down. Different woodlands contain different species each with their own pattern and colour fingerprints. We are lucky enough to know someone with a woodland that produces very rare, world class examples of this natural artwork.
Once the wood is milled and dried the fungi dies off and beautiful results are locked in place waiting to be revealed by our chisels. Between the time in the woodland and then air drying it can be 6-8 years after the tree came down before we get our hands on this material and our challenge is to make sure that we do it justice and turn something truly beautiful from it.
This we find is best accomplished by using clean lines and simple formal shapes which create a skin that contain the somewhat chaotic and organic natural patterns which expand outwards from within the piece.
