Sensai Flore Bowl in Brown Oak
Sensai Flore Bowl in Brown Oak
This sculptural bowl was hand turned from a stunning piece of English Brown Tiger Oak from a reportedly 400 year old oak tree. Apparently it took them an hour to count and double count the rings after it was brought down by a London council around 20 years ago for their own reasons…
This special piece of wood has been with us for the past 12 years but its dimensions didn’t fit any of our predefined shapes. That was until earlier this year when we designed and hand made a set of over 200 pieces for a 2 Michelin Stared Restaurant in Amsterdam. As part of that project, the chef (one of the most exciting in Europe at the moment) asked us to design some new shapes which combined our original forms with other influences that he liked and the Sensai Flore bowl with its large rim was the result.
Finally, with a shape that fit the piece of wood the pressure was on to turn it in a larger form. With all the cracks and fissures it was a white knuckle ride with chisels being gripped far harder than normal, hoping and willing that the bowl would make it out of the process in one piece. Mission accomplished!
Measures 18.5cm diameter at the rim and 8cm tall with a depth of 5cm.
Although finished with a hard wearing blend of food safe oils and waxes ,due to voids and fissures (all now stable) it is recommended for dry / ornamental use only.
